STP finalisation
Financial year 2025–26
Overdue by 114 days
Due dates
- All employees: 14 July 2026 (114 days ago)
- A finalisation declaration tells the ATO your STP reporting for the year is complete. The ATO then marks each employee’s income statement as tax ready and pre-fills their tax return.
- If you can’t finalise on time, apply to the ATO for an extended due date. Correct errors found after finalising within 14 days, and amend finalised data up to 5 years after the year ends.
General information, not tax advice.
How this works
The checker takes the last financial year that has ended on the date you enter (on 5 November 2026 that is 2025–26) and applies the ATO’s due dates for that year.
Arm’s length employees are due by 14 July. Closely held payees get 30 September, or the due date of the payee’s own tax return if you only have closely held payees, but only if you have 19 or fewer payees. A deferred date granted by the ATO replaces the standard date.
“Not sure” about whether you have finalised never shows as overdue; it shows the due date to check against.
Legal basis
- Taxation Administration Act 1953 (Cth) Sch 1 Div 389 (Single Touch Payroll)
- ATO: finalising your STP data
- ATO: STP concessional reporting (closely held payees)

Questions
When is STP finalisation due?
By 14 July after the end of the financial year for arm’s length employees. For 2026–27 that is 14 July 2027. Closely held payees can be finalised later if you have 19 or fewer payees.
What is the due date for closely held payees?
If you have 19 or fewer payees and pay both arm’s length employees and closely held payees, closely held payees are due by 30 September. If you only have closely held payees, it is the due date of each payee’s own tax return, usually 31 October. With 20 or more payees, they are due by 14 July like everyone else.
What does finalisation do for employees?
It tells the ATO your reporting for the year is complete. The ATO then shows the employee’s income statement as tax ready in its online services and pre-fills their tax return. Until then, employees can’t rely on the figures being final.
Do I still need to give payment summaries?
No, not for payments you report and finalise through STP. You still need payment summaries for any payments not reported and finalised through STP.
Can I fix a mistake after finalising?
Yes. Lodge an update event as soon as possible. Errors must be corrected within 14 days of finding them (longer if your pay cycle is longer), and finalised data can be amended for up to 5 years after the end of the financial year.
